Hillsboro – Wilma Schmidt, 89, passed away November 17, 2018 at Hillsboro Community Hospital in Hillsboro.  She was born March 9, 1929 in Goessel to Frank and Margaret (Hiebert) Woelk.  She married Andy Schmidt August 12, 1948 in Hillsboro.  Survivors include: son, Donovan Schmidt of McPherson; daughter, Lucretia (Bob) Vance of Hillsboro; 9 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.  Preceded in death by: husband, Andy Schmidt in 2003; son, Larry Schmidt in 2014; brother, Harold Woelk in 2018.  Celebration of Life Service 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at The Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro.  Memorials to Grace Revolution or Hillsboro M.B. Wilma R (Woelk) Schmidt was born to Frank and Margaret Woelk on March 9, 1929 at Goessel, Kansas. Wilma attended Gordon Grade School and Goessel High School, graduating in 1947. She worked at Bethesda Hospital as a housekeeper and later as nurse aid at the hospital.

Wilma was baptized upon her confession of faith and became a member of of the Goessel Mennonite Church on May 20, 1945 and later joined the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.

She and Andrew Schmidt were married August 12, 1948. During their first year of marriage they lived on a farm south of Lehigh, Kansas and later moved to Hillsboro where they lived for 50 years.

Wilma enjoyed meeting new friends and entertaining guests. She was willing to help out when needed. She was greatly concerned about her family and their well being and that they would be at peace with each other. It was always a great pleasure for her to help take care of the grandchildren, although at times she faced many hardships, especially in the later years.

Survivors include: son, Donovan Schmidt of McPherson; daughter, Lucretia (Bob) Vance of Hillsboro; nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, Andy Schmidt; son, Larry Schmidt and brother, Harold Woelk.

Her favorite Bible verses:

Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.

Psalm 27:1 – The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Hebrews 12:6a – Whom the Lord loveth, will he chasten

  1. My dearest friend Wilma received her wings the 17th of November. I will miss her more than words can say but I know she is happy. Her husband and son was there to greet her. I saw Wilma this past Thursday and I am so glad I did. Wilma you were one very special friend to me and I will miss you so much. Please know I will see you soon and what a day that will be. See you later my dear friend. I love you Wilma.
