Life Sketch Taken From the Funeral Bulletin
Vernice Ratzlaff was born on December 20, 1937 to David and Helen Kornelsen Ratzlaff in Hillsboro, Kansas and died on March 18, 2019 at the age of 81. She was the loved younger sister to two brothers, Marvin and Lowell. The family lived in a farmer’s household in the French Creek area just north of Hillsboro. Vernice attended grade school in the one-room French Creek country school and high school in Hillsboro. She also attended Tabor College in Hillsboro. After college, she was employed at a dental office in Hillsboro and as an accountant at a grain elevator in Lehigh, KS. In the early 60’s she moved to Denver and was employed at the Mountain Bell Telephone Company as a valued statistician. She worked there until retirement. She also spent many enjoyable times with her parents traveling in the United States.
Her love for the Lord, whom she accepted as her Lord and Savior at an early age, became evident in her activity at the Garden Park Church in Denver. She loved singing in the choir and extended her caring nature by befriending her neighbors, like Ann a lonely widow and volunteering at ‘More-for-Less’ a non-profit store, for many years. She also loved taking care of her precious cats. Her second favorite hobby must be her love of sports. She was a dictionary of sports information. She loved to watch all games on TV like basketball and of course the Broncos and Royals games. In 2005 she moved back to Hillsboro where she was active at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church and was the chairman of her Sunday School Class. Vernice lived at Grand Oaks Apartments, Hillsboro until her death. Our family will be forever grateful for the neighborly care given to her by Elaine Coach and Regina Hogle for many years. May the Lord bless you.
Vernice is preceded in death by her parents David and Helen Ratzlaff and sister-in-law Marlene, wife of Lowell. She is survived by her brother Marvin Ratzlaff and his wife Marilyn of Hillsboro, KS and brother Lowell Ratzlaff of Denver, CO and eleven nephews, nieces, numerous grand and great grand nephews and nieces. Vernice will be sorely missed by her family and many friends.
