Hillsboro – Timothy Kersten, 57, died March 8, 2018 near Galva, Kansas.  He was born September 4, 1960 to John and Wilma (Groeschel) Kersten in Houston, Texas.  Survivors include: wife, Michelle Kersten of Hillsboro; sons, Travis Kersten of Columbia, Missouri, Jonathan Kersten of St. Charles, Missouri; step-son, Jordan Bezdek of Manhattan, KS; daughter, Amy Kersten of Hillsboro; step-daughter, Toshia Widener of Hesston; brother, John Kersten of St Louis, Missouri; sisters, Dorothy Haws of Kennebunk, Maine, Vivian Jobst of Shakopee, Minnesota.  Funeral Service 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hillsboro.  Interment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery.  Family will receive guests from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Jost Funeral Home in Hillsboro.  Memorials to Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund in care of Jost Funeral Home P.O. Timothy Paul Kersten, 57, entered into rest March 8, 2018 near Galva, Kansas.

He was born September 4, 1960 to John and Wilma (nee Groeschel) Kersten in Houston, Texas; baptized on October 2,1960 at St. Paul Lutheran Church; confirmed on April 7, 1974 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church; and graduated from Lutheran High School in 1978.


After enlisting and serving in the US Navy from 1978 to 1984, Timothy attended Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska graduating in December 21, 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. He met and married the bride of his youth, Cherie Rauch, on December 1987. Following graduation, he attended Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis graduating with a Masters of Divinity degree in 1995 and was ordained at St. John Lutheran Church at Charter Oak, Iowa. He served as pastor of St. Matthew Lutheran in Nortonville, Kansas from 1995-1998; and then as pastor of Faith Lutheran in Abilene, Kansas from 1998-2002 before becoming an active duty chaplain with the U.S. Army Reserve. From 2002 to 2008, Chaplain Major Timothy P. Kersten served two tours in Iraq. More recently, he lived in Hillsboro, Kansas with his daughter Amy, and wife, Michelle (Dick) Kersten where they attended Zion Lutheran Church.


Tim was preceded in death by his first wife of 20 years, Cherie Kersten (nee Rauch), in 2008, the loving mother of his three surviving children; sons, Travis Kersten and wife, Andrea, of Columbia, Missouri; Jonathan Kersten of St. Charles, Missouri; and daughter, Amy Kersten of Hillsboro. Other survivors include: stepson, Jordan Bezdek of Manhattan, Kansas; stepdaughter, Toshia Widener of Hesston, Kansas; brother, John Kersten and wife, Karen, of St Louis, Missouri; sisters, Dorothy Haws of Kennebunk, Maine; and Vivian Jobst and husband, James, of Shakopee, Minnesota.
