Malvin Schmidt

Hillsboro – Malvin Schmidt, 89, died March 18, 2019 at Hillsboro Community Hospital in Hillsboro.  He was born June 2, 1929 to Andrew and Bena (Balzer) Schmidt rural Hillsboro.  He married Darlene Klaassen October 4, 1953 in Hillsboro.  Survivors include: sons, Jerry Schmidt of Salina, Leroy Schmidt of McPherson, Kelly (Jean) Schmidt of Harbor, WA; daughter, Malvina Schmidt of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  Predeceased by:wife, Darleen Schmidt in 2017; brothers, Andrew, Sam, Emanuel, Daniel; sister, Elma Rempel.  Celebration of Life Service 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2019 at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church officiated by Pastor Brian Allen.  Memorials to Hillsboro M.B. Malvin Wesley Schmidt was born June 2, 1929 at the Schmidt family farm in Hillsboro, Kansas. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in May of 1947. 

Malvin accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized on May 23, 1947. He was a lifetime member of the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church. 

Malvin met his wife of 64 years, Darlene Klaassen, on October 4, 1953. Malvin and Darlene raised three sons and one daughter. 

Malvin was a farmer from 1948 until 1990. He attended school in Chicago, Illinois to become an artificial inseminator. As an A-I technician he had his own business for 25 years. 

He worked as a painter for Round-Up Enterprises from 1978 to 1986 when that business closed. He then painted for Prairie Products Corporation from 1986 to 1988. In 1988 he took a job for USD 410 as a custodian and retired in 2000. 

Malvin continued to work one day a week at the Hillsboro Free Press during his retirement years. 

Malvin had a goal to visit all 50 states because of his love to travel. He was able to visit 48 states, Canada and Mexico. 

He enjoyed collecting and had a large collection of cow cream pictures. 

Malvin is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Bena Schmidt; his wife, Darlene; and his four brothers, Andrew, Sam, Emanuel and Daniel and one sister, Alma Rempel. 

He is survived by four children: Jerry Schmidt of Salina, KS; Leroy Schmidt of McPherson, KS; Kelly and Jean Schmidt of Friday Harbor, WA; and Malvina Schmidt of Tulsa, OK; four grandchildren: Jeremy Schmidt of McPherson, KS; Eric Heinrichs of North Little Rock, AR; Brittani Heinrichs of Tulsa, OK; and Trenton Schmidt of Tulsa, OK; and six great grandchildren.
