Life Sketch taken from Funeral Bulletin

Irene Ruth (Fertig) Jost, formally of Wichita, was called home to be with the Lord on February 25, 2018. Born in Stafford County, Kansas near Radium April 1, 1921 to Roy and Ruth (Yocum) Fertig, Irene currently was a resident of Hillsboro, Kansas beginning in 2005. After graduation from the Radium Grade and High School she attended Hays State Teachers College. Her life career as a teacher began in a one room school at Seward, Kansas. Irene married Robert C. Jost on April 27, 1941. They established their home in Hills boro and became members of the Mennonite Brethren Church. They moved to Wichita in 1954 where they resided forty years. Later residences included Satanta, Kansas and St. John, Kansas.

Irene loved people of all ages and had a zeal to share God’s Word with others. This passion was encouraged by her father, who exemplified daily Bible reading for personal guidance and strength. Early in their marriage, Bob and she met Dawson and Lila Trotman and Jim and Morena Downing who became lifelong encouragers and friends. At the same time they had a unique opportunity to open their home for Bible Study with high school aged and college young people two evenings a week for ten years. A youth radio broadcast, Truth for Youth, produced from these groups aired over KJRG. Also, evangelistic home visitations resulted in The Oaklawn Chapel being established in the Wichita area.

Opportunities to share the Scripture increased progressively after they moved to Wichita. These opportunities included “one to one” sharing, small group studies, travelling events, large single events, and in time the foundation of Bible Study Fellowship classes for women and children for the State of Kansas. Irene was afforded many speaking opportunities and was recognized by the State of Kansas for her extensive work in leading Bible studies.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Ruth Fertig, a son, Roger L Jost, a great-grandson, Derek T. Albright, a brother, Carl A. Fertig, sisters, Lorene E. Jost, Betty J. Dewey, and Mary Lou Fertig. Survivors are: Children, Robetta R.Trapp of North Newton, Kansas, Lynn A. (Joyce) Jost of Sterling, Colorado, Nancy E. (Robert) Ozick of Colorado Springs; and grandchildren: Gretchen Wagner, Craig (Rhea)Jost, Daren (Lacey) Jost, Rachel Quick, Nathan (Hannah) Ozick; and great grandchildren: Leighton Wagner, Lanna Wagner, Wyatt Quick, Liam Jost, Levi Jost, Darcey Jost, and Kate Jost; and siblings: Velma Root, Stanley (Elaine) Fertig, and Raymond (Jane) Fertig.

Irene spent her life well; reaching out, loving, and caring for others. She is already missed by family and many friends. We will honor her life with a Commemoration service on March 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethern Church, Hillsboro, KS and visitation with family present on March 26 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Jost Funeral Home, Hillsboro, KS.
