Life Sketch Taken From the Funeral Bulletin

Helen Elizabeth Schafer, daughter of Jacob (Jake) and Chirstina Schafer, was born September 28, 1925 on a farm two miles east of Durham, Kansas. She grew up on that same farm and received her education in the Durham schools. She graduated from Durham High School in 1943.

After high school, she attended Wichita Business Preparatory College. After graduating from business college, she went to work with the Internal Revenue Service on April 1, 1944. Her first job was in the Accounting Division, later moving into the Personnel Division. She retired in September of 1980 with 35 years of Federal Civil Service.

After retirement, Helen and her sister moved to Hillsboro where they lived for three and one-half years. In 1984, they moved to Newton, which became their permanent retirement home.

Helen and Laurine enjoyed traveling on bus tours, taking pictures and making new friends. They traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas and took a cruise through the Panama Canal. Helen also enjoyed reading, gardening and growing flowers.

Helen was preceded in death by her father, mother and sisters, Laurine and infant sister, Maranda Mae. She is survived by several cousins, all of whom were very special to her.
